Thank you to everyone who donated to help us provide emergency care to Monty (renamed Lilly when we discovered she was a girl). We are pleased to report that Lilly was successfully reunited with her mate and flock.
As we previously reported, despite tremendous progress in saving dogs and cats in pounds, many other animals who enter “shelters” still end up dead. This is certainly true of pigeons, who are often killed in large numbers, even though they have treatable medical conditions.
Lilly was found sitting on a sidewalk and wouldn’t move. Because the local pound and a local wildlife rehabilitation facility threatened to kill her, we took her to an emergency veterinarian at our expense. The veterinarian told us the little bird was so sick she would probably die within 24 hours. However, after intubating Lilly, providing nutrition and hydration, and treating her for parasites, followed by antibiotics and care, she recovered, gained weight, and last week, took to the sky.
